Box Score 4 RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The IU Southeast softball team fell 8-0 and 6-5 in 11 innings to Rio Grande on Sunday.
In game one, the RedStorm jumped out to a quick lead with a four-run bottom of the first. Back-to-back doubles started the scoring and a sacrifice fly by Zoe Doll made it 2-0. Jenna Myers hit a two-run home run to double the lead.
Lindsey Nelson and Katie Cook had back-to-back singles in the third to put runners on the corners with one out, but were left stranded.
Ellie Jackman was 2-for-3 in the loss.
In game two, IU Southeast finally broke open the scoring in the top of the 6rh when starter Brooklyn Gibbs helped herself with a RBI double to score Lindsey Nelson who had singled and moved to second on a bunt.
IU Southeast blew the game open with a four-run seventh inning. After Katie Templeman singled and Hayley McFarling walked, Lindsey Nelson singled to drive in Templeman. Katie Cook followed with a two-run double to left and Gibbs added another double to drive in Cook.
But the RedStorm answered in the bottom of the inning. After a single and an error, Caitlyn Brisker homered to get Rio Grande back in the game. Zoe Doll doubled to cut the lead to on and a sacrifice fly by Kenzie Cremeens scored Taylor Webb to tie the game.
Rio Grande had a chance to win it in the 8th with runners at first and second and one out but Gibbs recorded a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
Lindsey Nelson and Katie Cook had back-to-back one-out singles in the 9th and a flyout moved to Nelson to third but a strikeout ended the inning.
Rio Grande loaded the bases with one out the 10th but Gibbs got out of the jam again. Christen Risner was thrown out a home by Haley Smith and a ground out to short by Cremeens ended the inning.
The first two RedStorm batters were retired in the 11th but two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Shelby Schmitt reached on a error which allowed Cierra Clark to score and win the game.
Lindsey Nelson went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI in the loss.
IU Southeast travels to WVU Tech tomorrow at 1 p.m.
