Grenadiers Sweep Oakland City On Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team defeated Oakland City 3-2 and 3-0 Saturday on Senior Day behind the stellar pitching of starter Brooklyn Gibbs.

Gibbs worked all 14 innings and allowed just two runs and nine combined hits in the two contests.

In game one, Oakland City threatened with runners at second and third with no outs, but a groundout followed by a lineout and doubling off Emily Fitwater at first base ended the inning after a heads up play by Lindsey Nelson.

In the second, Katie Cook drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout but another groundout ended the inning.

Oakland City opened the scoring the top of the sixth inning when Abi Jacquess doubled to right-center to drive in Samantha Johnson and Jessi Goforth.

The Grenadiers were retired in order in the bottom of the inning and went to the bottom of the seventh still trailing 2-0.

Brooklyn Gibbs led off with a walk and Cook scalded a ball to center for a single which put runners at first and third. Then Cook stole second.

A sacrifice fly by Haley Smith drove in Gibbs to get the Grenadiers on the board and Cook moved to third.

Katie Templeman followed with a single to score Cook and then she stole second.

After Miranda Miller struck out, Erin Templeman singled through the left side and Katie Templeman slid in ahead of the throw to win it for the Grenadiers.

Katie Cook was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. Brooklyn Gibbs worked all seven innings allowing two runs on five hits, she walked two and struck out two.

In game two, the Grenadiers struck first when Macie Zink doubled to drive in Lindsey Nelson who had singled and stolen second. The Grenadiers would load the bases with one out but Zink would be forced out at home and Erin Templeman popped out to end the inning.

IU Southeast added another run in the bottom of the second when Ellie Jackman walked and stole second. Then she scored on a RBI single to right by Lindsey Nelson.

That was more than enough run support for Gibbs who scattered four hits and three walks in seven shutout innings of work. She struck out three.

The Grenadiers added another run in the sixth. Katie Templeman singled and stole second. Ellie Jackman singled to right field to bring in Templeman.

The Mighty Oaks loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh after a single, hit batsman and a walk, but Gibbs struck out McKendree Ward to end the game.

Ellie Jackman and Lindsey Nelson each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the game.

IU Southeast travels to Brescia on Tuesday at 4 pm ET.
