Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept Midway in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Grenadiers won game one 8-2 and game two 11-3 and closed the regular season winning 13 of their final 14 contests.
In the bottom of the first inning, Ellie Jackman led off for the Grenadiers with a double and advanced to third on a Brooklyn Gibbs single. A Midway fielding error with two outs allowed Jackman to score, giving the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead.
Midway responded in the top of the second with an inside the park home run to make it 1-1. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the third.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Katie Cook reached first on a Midway error and advanced to second on a Lindsey Nelson single. Katie Templeman was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Erin Templeman singled up the middle, driving in two runs to make it 3-1 IU Southeast.
A walk loaded the bases for the Grenadiers once again. Katie Templeman scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1, and the Grenadiers drew two bases loaded walks to score two more runs. IU Southeast scored five runs with two outs to take a 6-1 lead.
Ellie Jackman launched a home run off of the scoreboard to extend the lead to 7-1 IU Southeast. In the bottom of the sixth, the Grenadiers took an 8-1 lead on an RBI groundout by Katie Templeman.
Midway scored a run in the top of the seventh, but the Grenadiers went on to win 8-2. Ellie Jackman and Erin Templeman each drove in two runs in the contest.
In game two, Ellie Jackman led of the bottom of the first with her second home run of the day to give the Grenadiers an early 1-0 lead. Midway tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single.
IU Southeast's Lindsey Nelson delivered an RBI single to put the Grenadiers back on top in the third. Katie and Erin Templeman both followed with RBI singles of their own to extend the lead to 4-1. After a pitching change, Haley Smith drove in another IU Southeast run with the team's third straight RBI single.
After a Midway run, the Grenadiers made it a 6-3 game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Katie Cook sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the fifth, Macie Zink delivered with a two-out, two-run single to extend the lead to 8-3.
The Grenadiers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. A Haley Smith RBI groundout gave IU Southeast a 9-3 lead, and Emilee Edwards followed with a two-run single to secure an 11-3 victory for the Grenadiers.
The Grenadiers finished the regular season with a 22-23 overall record and a 16-10 record in RSC play. The RSC Softball Championship begins on May 5.
