Grenadiers Get Past Ohio Christian Friday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Three Grenadiers recorded double-figure kills as IU Southeast defeated Ohio Christian 25-7, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19 on Friday.

Ella Brooks led the way with 14 kills and Jessi Kramer and Maggie Purichia each added 10 in the win.

IU Southeast (7-5, 3-0 RSC) got off to a fast start as they opened the match with an 11-1 run. Cate Murphy had three aces during that stretch and Brooks had three kills.

With IU Southeast leading 15-7, the Grenadiers closed the set on a 10-0 run. Hannah Brown had three aces and the Grenadiers capitalized on four Trailblazer errors.

The second set was much closer throughout and the Grenadiers trailed 21-20. Maggie Purichia, Alexis Franks and Ella Brooks had three-straight kills to take the lead for IU Southeast. After an Ohio Christian kill, Maggie Purichia forced set point and Jessi Kramer won the set with a kill.

In the third set, Ohio Christian jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third set. The Trailblazers pulled away and led 21-13 but the Grenadiers had one last run in them.

A pair of kills by Alexis Franks and Emilee Organ and an ace by Averee Yoder sparked a rally. Four-straight points cut the deficit to 21-17.

Then a kill by Brooks and an attack error made it 23-20 but a kill by Madison Bickenstaff won the set for Ohio Christian.

The fourth set opened with Ohio Christian taking a 7-5 lead but the Grenadiers used a 10-1 run to take the lead for good. Ohio Christian cut the lead to 19-17 but a 6-2 run won the match for IU Southeasst.

Abigail Vogel and Maggie Purichia teamed up for two kills apiece down-the-stretch to win it.

Hannah Brown had five aces and 22 assists to lead IU Southeast. Cate Murphy had 21 assists and three aces. Averee Yoder had 19 digs while Emilee Organ had 16 and Ella Brooks added 10. Alexis Franks had two solo blocks and an assist in the win.

IU Southeast hosts Oakland City Saturday at noon.
