NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team dropped a four-set match to WVU Tech on Saturday.
Three Grenadiers led the way offensively,
Emilee Organ had 15 kills and
Ella Brooks and
Allison Daves each had 14 in the loss.
The first set was tightly contested with IU Southeast clawing back after trailing 13-8.
An ace by
Cate Murphy cut the lead to 17-15 and a setting error followed by a kill by
Ella Brooks cut the lead to 22-20.
But the Golden Bears scored the final three points of the period to take the first set.
The Grenadiers had a quick start to the second set and jumped out to a 9-2 advantage and had a 6-0 run during that stretch sparked by Brooks. She had an ace and Organ and Daves each had a pair of kills.
A 5-0 IU Southeast run extended the lead to 14-5 as Daves had pair of aces and Organ had a block.
WVU Tech cut the lead to 22-17 and IU Southeast answered by forcing set point on a kill by Daves and an attack error.
A kill by
Cate Murphy tied the match at a set apiece.
In the third set, IU Southeast trailed 16-14 but the Grenadiers capitalized on a service error, used an ace by
Alanna Wray and a kill by Daves to take a 17-16 lead.
The lead went back-and-forth until the Golden Bears took a 23-21 lead. A kill by Organ cut the lead to one but a serve error followed by a kill from Marianna Rivera won the set.
IU Southeast took a 10-7 lead in the fourth set after an Organ kill. After the Golden Bears rallied to take the lead, IU Southeast looked to be in a good position with a 20-17 lead after another Organ kill.
An Organ kill followed by an Organ ace and a kill by Daves extended the lead to 23-18.
But WVU Tech scored four consecutive points to cut the lead to one. IU Southeast forced set point after a Daves kill but then both teams kept fighting off set or match points to prolong the set as the lead went back-and-forth.
Finally after seven combined set or match points between the teams, an ace by Rivera won the match for WVU Tech.
IU Southeast had eight aces in the match, led by Murphy's three. She also led IU Southeast with 50 assists and
Brianna Bucher had 19 digs.
IU Southeast hosts IU East Tuesday at 7 p.m.
