FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated Concordia in four sets and swept IU Northwest on Friday behind the stellar play of
Ella Brooks and
Haley Jaster.
Ella Brooks totaled 34 kills in the two matches and Jaster had 25 total kills and seven blocks.
The Grenadiers led Concordia 11-8 in the first set after a pair of kills by
Ella Brooks and an attack error by the Cardinals.
An attack error and setting error extended the Grenadier lead to 17-15 but three-straight points pushed Concordia back in front 18-17.
Another attack error and bad set by Concordia see-sawed the lead back to IU Southeast and forced a Cardinal timeout.
Concordia recorded four of the next five points to take a 23-21 lead. But a setting error and a block by
Emilee Organ and
Haley Jaster tied the period at 23.
A kill by Abigail Austin and a block by Julianna Weems won the first set for Concordia on consecutive points.
IU Southeast was able to gain a comfortable 8-4 advantage in the second set after a kill by Brooks and an attack error.
A quick 4-1 run was sparked by
Emilee Organ and
Abby Ruzanka, who each had a kill and a combined on a block to extend the lead to 13-8.
Concordia answered with a run to take a 21-20 lead and then a kill by Kayla Peters forced set point for the Cardinals at 24-23.
The Grenadiers did not fold and
Haley Jaster tied the set with a kill followed by an ace by
Abby Marks and a kill by Brooks to secure the comeback win and tie the match.
Concordia led 11-7 to start the third set but IU Southeast used a 7-2 run to take a 14-13 lead.
Concordia took a 20-18 lead on back-to-back kills but the Grenadiers were resilient once again.
A kill by
Kali Bowie followed by an attack error and a block by Jaster put the Grenadiers in front by one.
An ace by
Lexi Striegel extended the lead to 22-20 and IU Southeast scored three of the next four points to take the lead in the match.
Emilee Organ had consecutive kills to force set point and a setting error won the set.
In the fourth set, IU Southeast fell behind 15-12 and then 20-16.
Haley Jaster and
Ella Brooks took over from there.
The pair recorded five straight kills to tie the set at 21.
Ella Brooks recorded three kills in the next five points to force match point and
Emilee Organ won the match with a kill.
Ella Brooks hit .328 in the match and had a match-high 26 kills.
Haley Jaster added 15 while Organ had nine.
Cate Murphy had 30 assists and
Abby Marks had 22 while
Emilee Organ had 21 digs and Brooks added 20 for the Grenadiers.
All three sets against IU Northwest were close throughout. The Grenadiers took a 17-14 lead after a block by
Abby Marks but the Redhawks cut the lead to one at 17-16.
Two kills by Jaster and an attack error made it 20-16 IU Southeast and then an error and a block by
Kali Bowie and Marks extended the lead to 22-17.
With the score 22-19, three-straight IUN errors won the set for IU Southeast.
IU Southeast led 14-12 in the second set and a service error, followed by an ace by
Isabelle George and an attacked lengthened the lead to 17-13.
IU Northwest cut the lead to 19-17 but back-to-back kills by
Emilee Organ moved the lead back to four.
With the score 23-20, a setting error followed by a kill by
Allison Daves won the set for the Grenadiers.
In the third set, IU Southeast took a 12-8 lead on a kill by
Reagan Ealy. The Redhawks cut the lead to 15-13 but the Grenadiers answered with four consecutive points.
A service error, two kills by Ealy and a kill by Kramer extended the lead.
Two kills by Jaster, followed by a Brooks and Jaster block and a kill by Brooks won the match for IU Southeast.
Haley Jaster led IU Southeast with 10 kills and Brooks had eight while Kramer added six in the win.
Cate Murphy had 17 assists and Abb Marks had 15.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast 13 digs while Organ chipped in with 10.
The Grenadiers conclude play on Saturday vs host Indiana Tech at 10 a.m. and St. Ambrose at noon.
