IU Southeast Bests St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated St. Mary-of-the-Woods (25-21, 16-25, 25-18, 25-22) in four sets on Saturday.
 
IU Southeast used a 7-0 run early in the first set to take a 10-2 lead. With IU Southeast ahead 12-4, SMWC used a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 12-8. IU Southeast used a 7-1 run to extend their lead to 19-9.
 
IU Southeast led 22-11, but SMWC used a 6-1 run to make it 23-17. A 5-1 run by SMWC made it 24-21, but IU Southeast would go on to take the first set 25-21.
 
SMWC opened the second set with a 10-2 run. The teams traded points until SMWC held a 16-9 lead. The Pomeroys took a ten-point lead at 22-12 and would go on to take the second set 25-16.
 
The teams were evenly matched to open the third set. IU Southeast used a 5-1 run to take a 13-8 edge. SMWC was able to cut the Grenadier lead to two at 16-14, but a 5-0 Grenadier run gave IU Southeast a 21-14 advantage. IU Southeast would take the third set 25-18.
 
SMWC and IU Southeast were deadlocked at 11-11 early in the fourth set after back-and-forth action. The Grenadiers scored a trio of points to take a 14-11 lead. The Grenadiers extended their advantage to five at 19-14.
 
After a point by SMWC made it 19-15, IU Southeast used a 5-1 run to take a 24-16 lead. The Pomeroys used a 6-0 run to make it 24-22, but IU Southeast would take the fourth set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
 
"Quite a few challenging things in a back-and-forth match today," IU Southeast head coach Eric Brian said. "This is another example of how versatile and resilient this team is. Our upperclassman led the pack, but we also had some good performances by our younger players."
 
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 16 kills and added 12 digs. Haley Jaster added 10 kills and 2.0 blocks. Carly Mason had a team-high 26 assists, and Kacy Hornish added 16. Ella Davidson led IU Southeast with 18 digs and three aces. Gracie Farmer also had three aces in the win.
 
IU Southeast returns to action on Tuesday for a road match against IU Columbus.
