NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated IU East in five sets (25-21, 25-18, 14-25, 18-25, 17-15) on Senior Day.
IU Southeast jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set. IU East cut the lead to two at 9-7 and one at 14-13. The Grenadiers responded with a pair of points to make it 16-13. The teams traded points until IU East cut the lead back to one at 21-20. IU Southeast closed the set on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-21.
IU East took an 8-5 lead in set two. With IU East ahead 11-9, IU Southeast used a 4-1 run to take a 13-12 lead. After an IU East point made it 13-13, a 6-0 Grenadier run gave IU Southeast a 19-13 edge. IU East was able to cut the lead to three on a pair of occasions, but the Grenadiers closed on a 4-0 run to take the second set 25-18.
An 8-1 run early in set three gave IU East an 11-5 lead. A 9-2 run later in the set gave the Red Wolves a 20-8 edge. IU East would take the third set 25-14.
IU East led 11-5 early in the fourth set. A 5-1 run by IU Southeast made it 12-10. With IU East ahead 15-13, the Red Wolves used a 7-1 run to make it 22-14. IU East would go on to take the fourth set 25-18.
The fifth set saw back-and-forth action until a trio of points gave IU East a 6-4 lead. IU Southeast came back to tie the set at 7-7, but an IU East point gave the Red Wolves an 8-7 lead.
IU Southeast took a 9-8 lead, but a 3-1 IU East run swung the lead back in the Red Wolves favor at 11-10. The Grenadiers answered with two points to take a 12-11 advantage.
With IU Southeast ahead 14-13, IU East rattled off a pair of points to give the Red Wolves a 15-14 edge. IU Southeast responded with three-straight points to win the fifth set 17-15 and the match 3-2.
"Another example of how resilient this team is," IU Southeast head coach
Eric Brian said. "We've missed the opportunity to close some five-setters this year. To get this one against a top team in the conference, especially on Senior Day, is a big step forward for this team."
Ella Brooks had a team-high 19 kills and recorded 12 digs as well as 6.0 blocks.
Haley Jaster had 17 kills and 6.0 blocks.
Carly Mason had a team-high 22 assists and recorded 12 digs.
Jessi Kramer led IU Southeast with 15 digs. Both
Madison Ramsey and
Jordan Vaughan had 6.0 blocks.
IU Southeast returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Brescia.
