IU Southeast Falls to No. 8 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to No. 8 University of the Cumberlands 100-60 on Tuesday.
 
Cumberlands jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first quarter, but IU Southeast used a 7-0 run to take an 11-8 lead. Cumberlands answered with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 15-11 advantage.
 
A layup later in the quarter gave the Patriots a 19-14 lead, but a three by Grace Stapleton made it 19-17. Another layup by the Patriots made it 21-17, but a three by Ella Brown brought IU Southeast within one at 21-20 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Cumberlands opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to make it 27-20. A layup by Taylor Treat made it 27-22, but a 5-0 run gave Cumberlands a 32-22 lead. A 6-2 run by IU Southeast made it 34-28, but Cumberlands used a 9-2 run to extend their advantage to 43-30 going into the half.
 
Cumberlands opened the third quarter with eight straight points to take a 51-30 edge. Cumberlands led by as many as 27 in the third quarter as the Patriots led 69-43 after three.
 
Cumberlands outscored IU Southeast 31-17 in the fourth quarter to secure a 100-60 win.
 
"I saw some things tonight that are very encouraging in our team," IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "We're starting to get better. The girls are starting to get it. We just need to get back in the gym, keep grinding, and things will take care of themselves. Fortunately, we get that these next two weeks."  
 
Lexi Starr led IU Southeast with 15 points, four steals and three assists. Ella Brown had 12 points and five rebounds. Taylor Treat added eight points and three assists.
 
IU Southeast returns to action on Dec. 3 at Simmons College.
