NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to St. Mary-of-the-Woods 80-66 on Tuesday.
SMWC jumped out to a 9-2 lead to force an early IU Southeast timeout. IU Southeast cut the lead to 9-6 before SMWC hit a basket to make it 11-6.
Leah Miller hit a three to cut the SMWC lead to 11-9, but the Pomeroys ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 17-9 lead into the second quarter.
SMWC hit a layup to make it 19-11 early in the second, but IU Southeast went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 19-17. A three by SMWC made it 22-17, but back-to-back baskets by
Linzie Wernert and
Leah Miller cut the Grenadier deficit to one at 22-21.
The Pomeroys extended their lead to 26-21, but a jumper by
Linzie Wernert and a three by
Leah Miller tied the game at 26-26. SMWC hit a layup to make it 28-26, but IU Southeast used a three by
Grace Stapleton to take a 29-28 advantage.

Grace Stapleton jumper gave IU Southeast a 31-28 lead, but SMWC closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 34-32 lead headed into halftime.
After a layup by
Grace Stapleton cut the SMWC lead to three at 36-33, the Pomeroys used a 6-0 run to take a 42-33 lead. IU Southeast cut the lead to six on several occasions, but SMWC had an answer for every Grenadier basket. A three by SMWC gave the Pomeroys a 63-54 lead going into the fourth quarter.
SMWC extended their lead to double digits at 69-58 with 6:26 remaining.
Leah Miller connected on a three to make it 68-61, but SMWC answered with a three of their own to make it 72-61.
Karly Sweeney connected on two free throws to cut the lead to nine, but SMWC responded with two free throws of their own to make it 74-63.
IU Southeast never got within nine down the stretch, falling to SMWC 80-66.
Leah Miller led IU Southeast with 18 points.
Linzie Wernert registered a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Karly Sweeney added 10 points.
IU Southeast returns to action in a road contest against IU Kokomo on Saturday.
