NEW ALBANY, Ind. –
Brayden Hazelwood's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning was the difference as IU Southeast defeated No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan 5-4 on Thursday before falling 9-5 in the nightcap.
Mason White had five RBI and a home run across the two games.
In game one, IU Southeast got on the board in the bottom of the first when White came through with his first hit of the day.
After
Luke Powell drew a two-out walk and
Kody Putnam singled to put runners on the corners, White doubled to left-center drive them in.
Indiana Wesleyan cut the lead in half in the second, but IU Southeast added runs in the fourth and seventh innings to maintain a comfortable lead.
In the fourth, Hazelwood reached on an error and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a throwing error.
In the seventh,
Ethan Burdette reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a two-out single by Powell and scored on a single by Putnam.
The Wildcats tied the game with a three-run eighth. A RBI single by Jake Thompson got the rally started and then two wild pitches allowed two more runs to score.
Logan Murphy led off the bottom of the eighth with a double down the left-field line and courtesy runner
Mikaii Stoner moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Max Flock.
Brayden Hazelwood came through with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Stoner.
Garrett Hill worked a scoreless ninth for his first save. He walked a batter and struck out one.
Luke Powell was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Kody Putnam and
Slater Schield each had two hits in the win.
Luke Schafer allowed one run on four hits in seven inning for a no-decision. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
In game two, the Wildcats opened up a 4-1 lead before the Grenadiers came back to tie with two runs in the third and a run in the fourth.
Mason White knocked in two runs with a single in the third and Schield doubled to left to drive in
Coulter Hamilton and cut the lead to one.
Three runs in the sixth and a pair in the eighth put the game away for Indiana Wesleyan.
Mason White hit a solo home run in the eighth, his fourth of the season. He was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI in the loss.
IU Southeast travels to No. 8 University of the Cumberlands on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
