NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast baseball team defeated Huntington 11-1 before falling 11-10 in game two on Sunday.
In game one, the Grenadiers scored in five of six innings, including a six-run fifth inning.
Slater Schield opened the scoring with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, driving in
Hazel Martinez who had walked.
In the third
Mason White singled and stole second. He came around to score on a RBI single by
Kody Putnam.
The Grenadiers added a pair of runs in the fourth inning with two outs.
Slater Schield singled and scored on a RBI double to left center by
Grant Shepherd. After White walked to load the bases, a wild pitch brought in Shepherd.
IU Southeast blew the game open in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two hit batters and a walk.
Max Flock scored on a wild pitch and another RBI single by Schield drove in
Trevor Goodwin.
Ethan Burdette drew a bases loaded walk and White followed with a RBI single.
Luke Powell grounded into a double play but Shepherd scored to extend the lead to 10-0.
Ryan Kassell capped off the scoring in the sixth when he drove in Goodwin with a single.
Luke Schafer allowed three hits and walked three in five innings of work. He struck out four for his first win.
Slater Schield finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Kody Putnam had two hits and two RBI.
In game two, the Grenadiers fell behind 5-0 after the top of the second and began to chip away.
Collin Long and
Mason White cut the deficit to 5-3 after a RBI single and sacrifice fly, respectively.
The fifth inning was an adventure as Huntington scored four more runs in the top of the frame, only to see IU Southeast respond with six in the bottom of the inning.
A RBI single by
Brayden Hazelwood, followed by a two-run single by Schield cut the lead to 9-6.
Mason White tied the game with a three-run home run to right, his sixth of the year.
After the Foresters took an 11-9 lead to the bottom of the seventh, the Grenadiers cut the lead to one when Long scored on a wild pitch, but the tying and winning runs were stranded.
Mason White drove in four runs and Hazelwood and Long each had two hits in the loss.
The series concludes with a doubleheader Monday at noon.
