NEW ALBANY, Ind. – IU Southeast rallied for a 6-4 win in game one of their doubleheader vs Huntington and hung on for a 10-7 in game two.
In game one, IU Southeast fell behind 3-0 before IU Southeast got on the board when
Ethan Burdette hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Bryce Deckman hit his second home run of the day to extend the Huntington lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning.
IU Southeast responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Max Flock led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a groundout by Burdette.
Slater Schield led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored on a RBI single by
Luke Powell to cut the lead to one,
Garrett Hill retired the side in order in the top of the sixth which set the stage for the comeback in the bottom of the inning.
Three-straight walks loaded the bases and a walk to
Colin Long tired the game.
Slater Schield followed with a sacrifice fly to score
Brayden Hazelwood and put the Grenadiers in front.
A throwing error added another run and extended the lead to 6-4.
Garrett Hill allowed one hit in the final inning but recorded a flyout and strikeout to end the game.
Ethan Burdette had two RBI and scored a run in the win.
Luke Powell and
Mason White each had two hits.
In game two, the Grenadiers trailed 1-0 but quickly took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Mason White doubled down the left-field line to score Schield and a sacrifice fly by Flock scored White to put the Grenadiers in front.
Kody Putnam added a pair of runs in the second with a two-run double.
Starter
Zach Gutermuth scattered two runs on four hits in five innings of work. With two on and one out in the third inning, he got a double play to end the inning and completed his day with a 5-4-3 double play in the fifth.
He struck out three and walked a pair for his first win.
The Grenadiers took a 10-2 lead in the fifth when Long doubled to drive in two and Schield followed with a RBI single.
The Foresters struck for six runs in the top of the sixth to get back into the contest but
Aiden Darlage struck out two around a walk before getting a groundout to secure the win for IU Southeast. He earned his first save in his collegiate debut.
Slater Schield was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI and
Mason White had two hits, scored twice and drove in three.
Kody Putnam finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
IU Southeast travels to No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan Tuesday at 3 p.m.
