Grenadiers Clip Eagles to Advance To RSC Quarterfinals

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Jocobi Hendricks had 29 points and 10 assists and Lane Lauderbaugh had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead IU Southeast past Midway in the first round of the 2024 River States Conference Basketball Championship on Monday night.

IU Southeast opened the game on a 21-7 and did not allow the Eagles to break into double-figures until the 8:31 mark of the first half.

The Eagles cut the deficit to nine but a Hendricks three-pointer followed by a Caleb Brown layup pushed the lead back to 14. Another three-pointer followed by two free-throws by Hendricks extended the lead to 36-19. IU Southeast led 38-25 at halftime. Jocobi Hendricks had 16 of his 20 points in the first half.

The Grenadier defense shut down Midway in the first half, holding the Eagles to 26 percent shooting from the field.

In the second half, the Eagles scored seven of the first nine points to start the period. Halfway through the frame, a three-pointer by Donnie Miller cut the lead to 52-45.

J.J. Reed answered with a three-pointer and then the Grenadier defense took over.

Armani Carr forced consecutive steals which lead to four points and extended the lead back to 11 points. On the next possession, Carr blocked Miller and got the rebound which led to a Richard Lang layup.

The Eagles would not go away and a three-point play by Tobias Thompson cut the lead to nine but a layup by Reed followed by a three-point by Hendricks sealed the game as IU Southeast took a 72-58 lead with 4:31 to play.

Lane Lauderbaugh had 12 of his 19 points in the second half. The Grenadiers shot 50 percent from the field in the second half but allowed the Eagles to shoot 44 percent from three-point range to get back into the contest.

IU Southeast doubled the points in the paint 36-18.

The Grenadiers will travel to St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Wednesday for a RSC Quarterfinal matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
