NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to IU East 71-66 in the First Round of the RSC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on Monday.
IU East led 6-3 halfway through the first quarter as both teams struggled to score early. After a layup made it 8-5 IU East, IU Southeast scored seven straight points to take a 12-8 lead. The teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter.
Linzie Wernert connected on a jumper early in the second quarter to make it 14-12, but IU East answered with a 5-0 run to take a 17-14 lead.
Makenna Wilson connected on a three to tie the game at 17-17.
After an IU East basket made it 19-17, IU Southeast used a 6-0 run to take a 23-19 edge. IU Southeast led 27-25 at halftime.
IU Southeast started the third quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 32-27 lead. IU East responded with an 8-0 run to swing the lead back in their favor at 35-32.
IU Southeast scored six straight points to take a 38-35 lead. After an IU East basket,
Makenna Wilson hit back-to-back jumpers to give IU Southeast a 42-37 advantage. The Grenadiers led 44-41 after three quarters.
After a
Linzie Wernert jumper gave IU Southeast a 46-43 lead, IU East rattled off seven straight points to take a 50-46 advantage. A layup by
Karly Sweeney made it 50-49, but another IU East three made it 53-49.
An IU East layup made it 55-51, but layups by
Makenna Wilson and
Karly Sweeney tied the game at 55-55. An IU East jumper made it 57-55, but
Linzie Wernert hit a jumper to tie the game at 57-57.
IU East connected on a jumper to take a 59-57 lead.
Makenna Wilson answered with a three to give IU Southeast a 60-59 edge. A
Leah Miller free throw made it 61-59 with 2:17 left.
A three with 1:51 left gave IU East a one-point lead at 62-61. Two free throws with 1:15 remaining gave IU East a 64-61 edge.
Leah Miller hit a free throw to make it 64-62, but IU East connected on a three to extend their lead to five at 67-62 with 36 seconds left.
Makenna Wilson hit a three with 15 seconds left to cut the Grenadier deficit to two at 67-65. IU East hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining to take a 69-65 lead. After a
Linzie Wernert free throw made it 69-66, IU East connected on a pair of free throws to clinch a 71-66 win.
Linzie Wernert had a double-double for IU Southeast with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Makenna Wilson had 17 points, and
Karly Sweeney had 14 points and a team-high four assists.
IU Southeast finishes the season 13-15 overall.
