NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team used a strong second quarter en route to a 65-50 victory over Brescia on Tuesday.
Brescia started strong, scoring the first 10 points of the game. IU Southeast was held scoreless for the first five minutes of the contest before a
Katie Durbin layup put the Grenadiers on the board.
Brescia hit a three to make it 13-4 late in the first quarter.
Makenna Wilson and
Leah Miller hit back-to-back baskets to cut the IU Southeast deficit to five at 13-8 at the end of the first.
Makenna Wilson hit a jumper to start the second quarter to cut the Brescia lead to three at 13-10. After a Brescia basket make it 15-10, IU Southeast used a 16-0 run to make it 26-15. IU Southeast ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 33-20 lead into halftime.
IU Southeast outscored Brescia 25-7 in the second quarter. The Grenadiers were 9-14 from the field in the second, including 4-8 from three.
The Grenadiers extended their lead to 16 at 42-26 on a
Linzie Wernert jumper. Later in the quarter, two free throws by Wernert made it 47-32 IU Southeast. A
Jesse Ledgerwood three gave IU Southeast a 50-32 advantage. IU Southeast led 50-34 after three quarters.
IU Southeast took a 19-point lead at 56-37 two minutes into the fourth quarter. A
Makenna Wilson three gave the Grenadiers a 59-37 edge. The Grenadiers lead never dipped below 15 points as IU Southeast cruised to a 65-50 win.
Makenna Wilson led IU Southeast with a career-high 16 points off the bench.
Leah Miller had 11 points, and
Jesse Ledgerwood added 10.
Linzie Wernert had seven points and 14 rebounds.
IU Southeast (9-11, 6-7 RSC) host Campbellsville - Harrodsburg at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
