NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast baseball team opened conference play on Saturday by defeating Shawnee State 8-3 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
In game one, Shawnee State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but a sacrifice fly by
Ethan Burdette cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning.
The Grenadiers took the lead for good with a three-run third inning.
Mason White singled and stole second. After
Trevor Goodwin walked, a RBI single by Burdette drove in White and tied the game. A two-run single by
Max Flock sent the Grenadiers in front 4-2.
After
Mason White led off the fifth with a double, another single by Burdette scored White to extend the lead.
After the Bears got a run in the seventh, IU Southeast scratched across a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kody Putnam drew a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Trevor Goodwin. After Burdette was hit by a pitch, both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
A triple to left by
Logan Murphy cleared the bases.
With runners at the corners in the eighth,
Trevor Goodwin got a bunt down and
Slater Schield was able to score from third.
Starter
Luke Schafer worked eight innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out seven. He faced the minimum in the second, third and fourth innings.
Mason White was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Ethan Burdette was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Max Flock and Mogan Murphy each drove in a pair.
In game two, IU Southeast scored first when White drove in
Colin Long on a fielder's choice.
The Bears tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the sixth.
In the sixth, Tyler Lund led off with a double and scored on a RBI single by Nolan Tressler. A single loaded the bases and an error allowed another run to score.
After Shawnee State scored another run in the seventh, IU Southeast got the tying run to the plate after a hit batter and a walk. But a strikeout and lineout ended the game.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
