JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with Huntington at Jeffersonville High School on Saturday, winning game one 7-4 and losing game two 8-2.
Huntington opened game one with a single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out, but
Madison Wathen struck out two batters in a row to keep Huntington scoreless.
McKenzie Walters led off the bottom of the first for IU Southeast with a double. After
Josie Lemmons walked,
Autumn Oehlstrom advanced the runners to second and third on a groundout. After a lineout by
Erin Templeman, Walters and Lemmons came around to score on an error by Huntington. A
Macie Zink triple scored
Cassi Roman as IU Southeast led 3-0 after one inning.
With two outs in the top of the second, Huntington used a walk and back-to-back singles to make it 3-1. In the top of the third, Huntington scored two more runs with two outs to tie the game at 3-3.
Cassi Roman homered in the bottom of the third to give IU Southeast a 4-3 lead. Huntington responded in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff walk,
Hallie Foley came in to pitch for IU Southeast. Back-to-back bunt hits gave Huntington the bases loaded with no outs. Huntington managed to tie the game at 4-4, but Foley limited the damage to one run.
IU Southeast used an
Autumn Oehlstrom double to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning.
Erin Templeman drew a walk and
Cassi Roman was hit by a pitch to give the Grenadiers the bases loaded with no outs. A groundball by
Macie Zink drew an errant throw home, which allowed two runs to score to give IU Southeast a 6-4 lead. A
Savannah Gaither RBI single gave the Grenadiers a 7-4 edge.
IU Southeast would go on to win 7-4.
Madison Wathen started and threw three innings for the Grenadiers.
Hallie Foley came in and got the win, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out three in four innings of work.
McKenzie Walters had three of the seven IU Southeast hits.
In game two, IU Southeast opened the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff double by
McKenzie Walters. After
Josie Lemmons singled and stole second, an RBI single by
Autumn Oehlstrom gave the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead.
Erin Templeman followed with a sacrifice fly to give IU Southeast a 2-0 edge.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the top of the second, Huntington scored a run on a wild pitch to make it 2-1. After a walk, Huntington used a two-RBI double to take a 3-2 lead.
The score remained 3-2 until the fifth. With runners on the corner and two outs once more, Huntington used a three-run home run to extend their lead to 6-2. Huntington scored a run in the sixth and seventh and would go on to win 8-2.
Maci Warner got the start for IU Southeast and threw five innings.
Hannah Nunemaker came in and threw the final two innings.
McKenzie Walters had three of the seven hits for the Grenadiers in the contest.
IU Southeast returns to action for a doubleheader against IU South Bend at Jeffersonville High School at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
