CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated Shawnee State 7-3 in the River States Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday.
 
Shawnee State had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the first, but Luke Schafer struck out back-to-back batters to get IU Southeast out of the jam.
 
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth. Kody Putnam connected on a solo home run to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
 
An RBI single by Shawnee State in the top of the fifth tied the game at 1-1.
 
Slater Schield led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Colin Long. Mason White followed with an RBI double to give IU Southeast a 2-1 lead. A Luke Powell RBI single made it 3-1 Grenadiers.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Brayden Hazelwood connected on a two-run home run to give IU Southeast a 5-1 lead.
 
Mason White scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give IU Southeast a 6-1 edge. An RBI double by Trevor Goodwin made it 7-1 Grenadiers.
 
An RBI double by Shawnee State in the top of the ninth made it 7-2. With the bases loaded and two outs, an RBI single made it 7-3. A second run appeared to have scored, but the umpires huddled and overturned the call. The runner was called out, and IU Southeast secured a 7-3 win.
 
Luke Schafer got the win for IU Southeast, allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight. Connor Sims followed with two scoreless innings in relief. Garrett Hill and Conner Fries combined to throw an inning, and Luke Powell came in to close the game for the Grenadiers.
 
Mason White led IU Southeast with two hits, including a double. Trevor Goodwin also doubled in the win. Kody Putnam and Brayden Hazelwood each homered for the Grenadiers. Luke Powell and Alex Yurt each stole a base.
 
IU Southeast (31-17) returns to action on Saturday at 4:00 PM against the winner of WVU Tech and Shawnee State.
