CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The IU Southeast baseball team fell to Point Park 10-8 in the RSC Baseball Championship Game on Sunday.
Point Park hit a solo home run in the top of the second to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second,
Max Flock and
Slater Schield singled for the Grenadiers.
Colin Long was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Mason White delivered an RBI single to make it 1-1, but the go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
An RBI double by Point Park in the top of the third put the Pioneers ahead 2-1.
After
Kody Putnam doubled with one out in the bottom of the third,
Trevor Goodwin connected on a two-run home run to put IU Southeast back in front 3-2.
A two-run home run in the top of the fourth put Point Park ahead 4-3. A solo home run made it 5-3, and an RBI single gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead. An RBI fielder's choice in the top of the fifth gave Point Park a 7-3 lead.
After
Kody Putnam tripled in the bottom of the fifth,
Trevor Goodwin delivered an RBI single to cut the Point Park lead to 7-4.
IU Southeast loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. After back-to-back strikeouts,
Mason White drove in a run with an infield single to make it 7-5.
Luke Powell followed with a two-RBI single to tie the game at 7-7, and an RBI single by
Kody Putnam put the Grenadiers ahead 8-7.
Point Park scored a run in the top of the ninth on a single and a throwing error to tie the game at 8-8. A two-run home run put the Pioneers ahead 10-8, which would go on to be the final score.
Kacey Cheek got the start for IU Southeast and threw three innings.
Connor Sims threw a third of an inning, and
Tyler Yotkewich threw one inning in relief.
Garrett Hill came in and threw 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Luke Powell came in from right field to throw the ninth.
Mason White and
Kody Putnam each had three hits for the Grenadiers.
Trevor Goodwin drove in a team-high three runs.
IU Southeast (32-18) earned an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball Opening Round via their appearance in the RSC Championship game. They will find out where they are playing on Thursday, May 9 at 5 PM during the NAIA Baseball National Championship Selection Show.
