NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated IU East in a five-set thriller in the quarterfinals of the RSC Tournament on Tuesday.
The first set was back-and-forth as the teams were tied 11 different times. With IU Southeast up 20-19, IU East used a 6-1 run to take the first set 25-21.
The second set saw the teams tied at 15-15. IU Southeast then used a 5-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. IU East cut the lead to two at 23-21, but it was the Grenadiers who took the second set 25-21.
IU East led early in the third set, but IU Southeast crawled back to tie the set at 17-17. IU East took a 22-20 lead, but the Grenadiers came back to tie the set at 22-22. IU East then scored three of the final four points to take the third set 25-23.
IU Southeast led for the beginning of the fourth set, but IU East came back to tie the set at 15-15. The Grenadiers then used a 7-0 run to take the set 22-15. IU East then used a 7-1 run to cut the Grenadier lead to one at 23-22. IU Southeast had set point at 24-22, but IU East tied the set at 24-24. The set was also tied at 25-25 and 26-26, but it was the Grenadiers who took the fourth set 28-26.
IU East took a 7-5 lead in the fifth set, but IU Southeast answered with a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. IU East answered with a 5-0 run of their own to swing the lead back in their favor at 12-10. IU Southeast tied the set at 13-13, but a kill from IU East gave the Red Wolves match point at 14-13. IU Southeast would not be denied, however, as the Grenadiers scored the final three points to take the fifth set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 25 digs and 18 kills.
Nicole Stratford had 16 kills and 15 digs.
Addyson Schneider added 12 kills.
Carly Mason led IU Southeast with a career-high 54 assists.
"So proud of the fight tonight!" IU Southeast head coach Taylor Wilson-Evanczyk said. "Monday started a new season for us, and we are excited to get the opportunity to practice tomorrow."
IU Southeast moves to 19-7 on the season. The Grenadiers travel to #15 IU Kokomo on Friday for the RSC Tournament Semifinals.
