IU Southeast Defeats SMWC on Senior Day

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated SMWC in four sets on Senior Day to conclude the regular season.
 
The first set was back and forth as the teams were tied at 16-16. With SMWC ahead 17-16, IU Southeast used a 5-0 run to take a 21-17 lead. SMWC followed with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 22-21 advantage.
 
Both teams had set points, but the two teams found themselves tied at 25-25. IU Southeast took a 26-25 lead, but the Pomeroys answered and took the lead back at 27-26. SMWC led 28-27 and 29-28, but the Grenadiers fought back both times.
 
IU Southeast took a 30-29 lead, but SMWC answered with three straight points to take the first set 32-30.
 
IU Southeast took a 12-5 lead early in the second set. The Grenadiers led by as many as 11 points as the Grenadiers cruised to a 25-15 second set victory.
 
Set three was tightly contested as the teams were knotted up at 17-17. IU Southeast used a 4-1 run to take a 21-18 lead. The Grenadiers would go on to win the third set 25-22.
 
SMWC took a 12-7 lead in the fourth set. IU Southeast answered with a 9-2 run to take a 16-14 advantage. The Pomeroys responded with four straight points to take an 18-16 lead. The Grenadiers followed with back-to-back points to tie the set at 18-18.
 
The teams traded points until the set was tied at 23-23. The Grenadiers scored back-to-back points to take the fourth set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
 
IU Southeast was led by Ella Brooks, who had a team-high 17 kills and 3.0 blocks. Haley Jaster added 14 kills. Carly Mason had a team-high 40 assists and three aces. Ella Davidson led the Grenadiers with 17 digs.
 
"A great day to be a Grenadiers!" IU Southeast head coach Taylor-Wilson Evanczyk said. "All 14 people contributed today and did their job. A great win for our seniors and a true example of playing for the person next to you, not yourself. We start a new season tomorrow and it's time to rise to the occasion."
 
IU Southeast finishes the regular season 18-7 and 11-5 in RSC play. The Grenadiers have earned the 4 seed in the RSC Tournament and will host 5 seed IU East on Tuesday at 7:00PM.
