COLUMBUS, Ind. – The 16
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team exploded for 56 combined runs in the doubleheader against IU Columbus on Friday.
IU Southeast scored nine runs in the top of the first, five of which were driven in by
Logan Beard.
The Grenadiers scored four more in the second, including home runs by
Trevor Goodwin and
Logan Murphy.
IU Southeast then scored 10 runs in the third, four of which came from a grand slam by
Preston Shelton.
Logan Beard hit a two-run home run in the fourth to make it 25-1.
IU Southeast scored eight more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 35-1 lead. The Grenadiers would go on to win 35-2.
15 different Grenadiers recorded a hit, and 13 different Grenadiers drove in a run.
Logan Beard led IU Southeast with three hits and eight RBI.
Brendan Whalen got the win, allowing just three hits and one run in five innings of work.
Luke Shelton and
Travis Kellems each threw an inning in relief.
IU Southeast led 2-1 after the first inning of game two.
The Grenadiers scored five runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. IU Southeast then scored five in the fifth to make it 12-2.
Two runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh gave IU Southeast a 21-4 win.
11 different Grenadiers recorded a hit in game two, and 10 different Grenadiers drove in a run.
Hazel Martinez led IU Southeast with three hits, including a home run, and six RBI.
Luca Sandrella picked up the win, allowing two runs in five innings.
Daly Skees and
Aiden Darlage threw in relief.
"It wasn't ideal playing six games in four days, but the guys did a great job," IU Southeast head coach
Brett Neffendorf said. "Today the offense barreled the ball as well as you can ask, and the approaches were good. The pitching threw a ton of strikes and got the hitters off the field quickly to keep putting up runs."
No. 16 IU Southeast now sits at 19-6 overall and 8-1 in RSC play. The Grenadiers host No. 5 Cumberlands on Wednesday.
