IU Southeast Drops Doubleheader to Taylor

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Taylor on Saturday.

IU Southeast took a 1-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the first on a Sofia Guy RBI single. Taylor responded by scoring a run in the top of the second and in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

An RBI single by Maddy Olander in the bottom of the third tied the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, McKenzie Walters delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2 IU Southeast. Two more runs came around to score on an error, and a double steal brought home another run to put IU Southeast ahead 6-2.

A double steal in the top of the fifth plated a run for Taylor, making it 6-3. IU Southeast responded with a sacrifice fly by Sofia Guy in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead.

Taylor scored four runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 7-7. IU Southeast put a runner on third with one out in the seventh but was unable to capitalize as the game went into extra innings.

Taylor scored six runs in the top of the eighth to take a 13-7 lead, which would go on to be the final score.

McKenzie Walters led IU Southeast with three hits. Sofia Guy had two RBI. Josie Lemmons, Chloee Shewmaker, and Alaina Winzeler all stole a base.

Hallie Foley got the start for IU Southeast, throwing 5.1 total innings. Elliot Nance took the loss in 2.2 innings of work.

Taylor took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in game two. A run in the second put the Trojans up 2-0. Taylor used another run in the fourth to take a 3-0 edge.

RBI singles by McKenzie Walters and Kaitlyn Leister in the bottom of the fourth cut the Taylor lead to 3-2, but Taylor responded with four runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-2.

Sofia Guy drove in a run with an RBI double in the fifth to make it 7-3, but the Trojans responded with two runs to take a 9-3 lead.

IU Southeast scored a run in the seventh on a Lillian Mackey single, but it was too little too late as Taylor secured a 9-4 win.

Sofia Guy led IU Southeast with two hits, including a double. Chloee Shewmaker also doubled. Haley Fuhr stole a base for the Grenadiers.

Emma Davis got the start for IU Southeast, taking the loss in a complete game effort.

"We didn't capitalize with runners in scoring position," IU Southeast interim head coach Erin Templeman said. "Couple errors on defense along with some missed communication Taylor took advantage of in game one. In game two, we need to start making adjustments sooner. We can't wait until the last inning to start making adjustments. We need to do a better job adjusting at the plate pitch by pitch."

IU Southeast returns to action on Monday for a home doubleheader against Lindsey Wilson.
