IU Southeast Swept by Shawnee State on Saturday

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The IU Southeast softball team was swept by Shawnee State in a doubleheader on Saturday.

IU Southeast scored first in game one. An RBI single by Kaitlyn Leister put the Grenadiers ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.

Shawnee State scored four runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead. The Bears scored four more runs in the fourth to make it 8-1. Two more Shawnee State runs in the fifth gave the Bears a 10-1 run-rule win.

Lillian Mackey led IU Southeast with two hits. Emma Davis took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.

IU Southeast scored first in game two as well. In the top of the third, an RBI triple by Brynlea Bennett put the Grenadiers ahead 1-0.

The game remained 1-0 until the sixth. Shawnee State scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.

The game would go to extra innings, where Shawnee State would use a walk off double to win 2-1 in eight innings.

Kaitlyn Leister and Hannah Nunemaker each had two hits. Brynlea Bennett tripled, and Josie Lemmons stole a base.

Hannah Nunemaker took the loss, allowing just one earned run on five hits in 7.1 innings.

"Game one we had a lot of defensive errors that gave them unnecessary runs," IU Southeast interim head coach Erin Templeman said. "Along with that, the bats just were not there. We couldn't make adjustments, and we were not effective with runners in scoring position."

IU Southeast falls to 20-12 overall and 15-8 in RSC play. The Grenadiers travel to Rio Grande for a doubleheader on Sunday.
