No. 18 IU Southeast Defeats No. 11 Oklahoma Wesleyan, Falls to No. 24 British Columbia in NAIA Opening Round

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The four seed IU Southeast defeated two seed Oklahoma Wesleyan, but saw their season come to a close at the hands of three seed British Columbia.
 
IU Southeast scored first against Oklahoma Wesleyan. An RBI single by Preston Shelton gave the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. A two-RBI double by Colin Long made it 3-0. A throwing error made it 4-0, and an RBI single by Grant Shepherd made it 5-0. A bases loaded walk by Logan Beard gave IU Southeast a 6-0 lead.
 
Oklahoma Wesleyan scored three runs in the second to make it 6-3.
 
A sacrifice fly in the third by Coulter Hamilton made it 7-3, but a five spot by Oklahoma Wesleyan in the fifth swung the game in their favor at 8-7.
 
An RBI double by Logan Beard in the fifth tied the game at 8-8. A wild pitch scored another run, and a two-RBI single by Preston Shelton gave IU Southeast an 11-8 lead.
 
A wild pitch in the sixth made it 12-8 IU Southeast. A sacrifice fly by Nolan Bowser gave the Grenadiers a 13-8 lead. An RBI sac bunt by Colin Long in the seventh made it 14-8, which would be the final score.
 
Preston Shelton led IU Southeast with three hits. Both Shelton and Colin Long had three RBI. Long, Shelton and Logan Beard all doubled.
 
Eli Laurent got the start, allowing six runs in four innings. Jackson Grissom followed in relief, and Zak Rasener got the win, throwing 0.2 innings out of the pen. Cade Rusch and Conner Christopher V both threw two scoreless innings apiece.
 
IU Southeast scored first against British Columbia, as Grant Shepherd delivered an RBI groundout in the second to make it 1-0.
 
British Columbia scored two in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. The Thunderbirds scored another in the sixth to make it 3-1.
 
An RBI single by Trevor Goodwin in the sixth made it 3-2. A two-RBI double by Hazel Martinez in the seventh gave the Grenadiers a 4-3 lead.
 
British Columbia scored a run in the eighth to tie it, and the game would go to extra innings.
 
The Thunderbirds scored three runs in the eleventh and would go on to win 7-4, ending IU Southeast's season.
 
Preston Shelton, Ethan Burdette, and Coulter Hamilton all had two hits. Hazel Martinez had two RBI. Logan Beard and Hazel Martinez each doubled, and Coulter Hamilton stole a base.

Gavin Gentry got the start, allowing two runs in five innings. Nick Pazos followed, allowing two unearned runs in 2.2 innings. Aiden Darlage threw a scoreless innings, and Luca Sandrella came in to get an out in relief. Daly Skees took the loss, allowing three runs in an inning of work. Eli Laurent came in to get the final three outs.
 
"I couldn't be more proud of this group," IU Southeast head coach Brett Neffendorf said. "The growth from start to finish was incredible and the way they competed to play in the championship game was enjoyable to watch."

IU Southeast finishes the season 32-18.
