SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The IU Southeast softball season came to an end on Friday in the RSC Conference Tournament.
In game one, IU Southeast played Oakland City. The Mighty Oaks took a 2-0 lead in the first.
A double steal by
Josie Lemmons and
Brynlea Bennett in the first made it 2-1.
Three runs by Oakland City in the fourth made it 5-1.
An RBI single by
Josie Lemmons in the sixth made it 5-2, but Oakland City scored three runs in seventh to take an 8-2 lead, which would be the final score.
Brynlea Bennett led IU Southeast with two hits. Bennett,
Alaina Winzeler, and
Savannah Gaither doubled, and
Kaitlyn Leister tripled.
Josie Lemmons and
Brynlea Bennett both stole a base.
Hannah Nunemaker took the loss, allowing five earned runs in seven innings.
IU Southeast played Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in an elimination game. SMWC took a 1-0 lead in the first.
A sacrifice fly by
Kaitlyn Leister in the first tied the game at 1-1, but SMWC scored two runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
The game remained 3-1 until the sixth. An infield single by
Alaina Winzeler and a throwing error allowed two runs to score to tie the game at 3-3. An RBI single by
Savannah Gaither made it 4-3, and an RBI single by
Josie Lemmons made it 5-3, which would be the final score.
Brynlea Bennett and
Savannah Gaither both had two hits.
Josie Lemmons and
Haley Fuhr each stole a base.
Emma Davis picked up the win, allowing one earned run in seven innings.
IU Southeast played IU Columbus in another elimination game. IU Columbus took a 2-0 lead in the second.
An RBI double by
Hannah Nunemaker in the fifth made it 2-1. An RBI single by
McKenzie Walters in the sixth made it 2-2. A bases-clearing double by
Savannah Gaither made it 5-2, and an RBI triple by
Hannah Nunemaker made it 6-2.
IU Columbus stunned the Grenadiers with six runs in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead. IU Southeast loaded the bases in the seventh, but it was IU Columbus who would win 8-6 and end the IU Southeast season.
Sofia Guy led IU Southeast with three hits.
Savannah Gaither doubled and drove in three.
Hannah Nunemaker doubled, tripled, and drove in two.
Hannah Nunemaker took the loss, allowing eight runs in 6.2 innings.
Emma Davis got the final out in the top of the seventh.
"Tough loss," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "It was neck and neck all game. Conference play is tough. Teams come out aggressive and everyone has a fresh start. Unfortunately they were able to string together a few more runs than we did. No doubt in my mind we will be back next year."
IU Southeast finishes the season 27-16.
