NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Four Grenadiers scored in double-figures and
Ethan Haddaway recorded a double-double as IU Southeast roared past Rio Grande 83-65.
Trent Hinkle led IU Southeast with 21 points and four assists.
Nathaniel Hoffman had 18 points, Haddaway had 10 points and 10 rebounds and
Jordan Treat had 11 points off of the bench in the win.
The Grenadiers never trailed and forced 13 turnovers which led to 16 points in the contest.
"This was a great win for our guys,' head coach
Wiley Brown said. "Our defensive press turned them over and we capitalized on the offensive end. On offense, we spaced the floor and knocked down shots. Our ball movement was great, which was a huge factor in getting open looks. Back to the lab!"
The first half was tightly contested for the first 12 minutes of the game as IU Southeast led 19-15 with 8:19 left.
Cole Thomas hit a three and baskets by
Eli Meyer and
Jordan Treat pushed the lead to 26-17.
Trey Robertson cut the deficit to 26-21 with 5:30 to play in the half but
Trent Hinkle hit a pair of free-throws on consecutive possessions to extend the lead.
Isaac Strunk hit a three to extend the lead to 37-26 and
Trent Hinkle capped off the first half with a three at the buzzer to take a 44-31 lead to halftime.
Trent Hinkle had 14 points in the first half to spark the Grenadier offense.
Nathaniel Hoffman added eight and Ethan Haddway had six.
Trent Hinkle came out hot in the second half as he scored off a layup and then a three-pointer to put IU Southeast in front 49-34.
Consecutive three-pointers by Robertson cut the lead to 59-52 with 10:00 minutes to play but Hinkle responded with a jumper and then a miss by Robertson was answered by a three by Hoffman at the other end to push the IU Southeast lead back to 12.
Another three by
Jordan Treat put the game out of reach with 8:30 to play. The RedStorm would not get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
IU Southeast shot 51 percent from the field in the game and were 16-of-30 (53 percent) in the second half.
IU Southeast hosts Brescia Tuesday at 6 p.m.
