NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Five Grenadiers scored in double-figures led by
Jaden Johnson's 19 points and 10 rebounds as IU Southeast hung on to defeat Brescia 92-88 on Tuesday.
"We won but didn't play well," head coach
Wiley Brown said. "Our defense was awful. Brescia played desperate and we didn't. Give al the credit to Brescia they capitalized on our mistakes. Back to the lab."
IU Southeast jumped out to a 16-5 lead to start the contest.
Jaden Johnson and
Nathaniel Hoffman had 14 of the 16 points to spark the offense.
A pair of layups by Johnson and one by
Trent Hinkle extended the lead to 22-7 and IU Southeast looked to be firmly in control.
A 24-10 Brescia run cut the deficit to one with four minutes to play in the half.
Jordan Treat stopped the run with a big three-pointer and then a steal and basket by Haddaway added to the lead.
After a Brescia technical foul,
Trent Hinkle hit a pair of free-throws and
Jaden Johnson hit one to push the lead back to double-digits.
IU Southeast led 45-35 at halftime.
Jaden Johnson had 13 of his 19 points in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting.
In the second half, Brescia chipped away at the IU Southeast cutting the lead to four points and then three but each time IU Southeast had an answer with key three-pointers, first by Hoffman and then by
Camden Pfeister.
After a
Cole Thomas three-pointer IU Southeast led 78-67 halfway through the period. The Bearcats went on an 11-0 run as the Grenadier offense went cold from beyond-the-arc.
With the score tied at 78, Johnson scored on a layup and then
Trent Hinkle connected on a buzzer-beating three-pointer as the shot-clock expired to put the Grenadiers in 83-78 with 3:43 to play.
After a miss on the other end, Hinkle was fouled and hit two free-throws.
Jordan Cooke kept the Bearcats in it with a three-pointer but that was answered by Treat for IU Southeast.
A three-point play by Israel Momodu followed by an IU Southeast turnover and layup by Linkin Lockhart cut the IU Southeast to just 88-86 with 44 seconds left.
Nathaniel Hoffman hit a jumper and then Hinkle hit two free throws to put the game away.

Trent Hinkle had 14, including 10 in the second half,
Ethan Haddaway had 10 points and six rebounds and
Jordan Treat added 11 points.
IU Southeast shot 53 percent from the field in the second half and were 7-of-12 from three-point range and scored 20 points off of turnovers in the game.
The Grenadiers travel to WVU Tech Saturday at 1 p.m.
