BECKLEY, W.VA. – IU Southeast led the entire way and the game was never tied as the Grenadiers defeated West Virginia Tech 71-60 on Saturday.
IU Southeast led 15-11 when
Jaden Johnson connected on a three-pointer with 7:37 to play in the half. On the next possession,
Jordan Treat drove and scored to extend the lead.
After the Golden Bears cut the lead to 25-22,
Camden Pfeister hit a three and
Jaden Johnson and
Eli Meyer both scored on the following possessions to extend the lead to 32-24.
Nathaniel Hoffman capped off the half with a layup with under 30 seconds to play and the Grenadiers took a 35-24 lead to halftime.
IU Southeast held WVU Tech to just 7-of-25 shooting in the opening half (28 percent) and just 1-of-11 from three-point range.
Jaden Johnson had 13 points and
Trent Hinkle added eight to lead the Grenadiers in the first half.
In the second half, WVU Tech cut the deficit to eight points early in the period but IU Southeast responded with six-straight points in the paint to lead by double-figures again.
The Golden Bears made one final push with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 49-45 halfway through the period but would not get closer.
Nathaniel Hoffman hit two three-pointers to help extend the lead back to double-digits.
After Brandon Moore scored on a layup to make it a 61-52 Grenadier lead,
Jordan Treat scored. Then a steal by
Isaac Strunk and a layup by Hinkle secured the win.
Trent Hinkle led IU Southeast with 20 points and three steals.
Jaden Johnson had 13 points and
Nathaniel Hoffman added 12.
IU Southeast held the Golden Bears to just 4-for-21 shooting from three-point range.
"We guarded well as a team, holding them to under 20 percent shooting from three-point range and won the rebounding war,' head coach
Wiley Brown said. "Guys came off the bench and set a tone with effort and energy on the defensive end."
The Grenadiers host IU Columbus Tuesday at 6 p.m.
