Shawnee State Gets Past IU Southeast 79-74 In Overtime

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Shawnee State defeated IU Southeast 79-74 in overtime on Saturday behind the play of Tyreon Payne who scored 12 of the 20 Shawnee State points in overtime.
 
The Grenadiers trailed 19-11 seven minutes into the game but a basket by Camden Pfeister followed by a Pfeister offensive rebound and layup by Bailey Temming cut the lead to four. After another defense stop, Trent Hinkle hit a three-pointer to make it 19-18 Shawnee State.
 
IU Southeast took the lead on a Jaden Johnson jumper shot and the lead went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half. Shawnee State led 33-31 at halftime.
 
In the second half, took the lead on a three by Hinkle but could not gain a larger lead than four points.
 
After Temming hit one of two free-throws to extend the lead to 48-44, the Bears scored the next four points to tie the game with 7:35 to play.
 
A layup by Johnson followed by a stop defensively, led to a foul on Temming who hit both free-throws to put IU Southeast in front 59-55 with 1:32 to play.
 
Tyreon Payne with fouled and hit two free-throws and then a missed layup by Hinkle got the Bears the possession they needed. Jaden Johnson blocked a shot by Jason Steele and the offensive rebound went to Steele who was blocked by Temming. The ball was batted around and Payne was eventually fouled and hit both free-throws to tie the game at 59 with 23 seconds left.
 
Kiante Williams ended Grenadiers' final possession with a steal and he missed a three and sent the game to overtime.
 
In overtime, Shawnee State jumped out to a 64-62 lead but a Nathaniel Hoffman three-pointer put IU Southeast back in front.
 
Tyreon Payne scored on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 70 and then got a steal and outlet to Williams to put Shawnee State in front with 1:42 to play.
 
Bailey Temming was fouled and hit one of two shots to cut the lead to 72-71 but Rhyece Deboard scored to push the lead to 74-71. Nathanial Hoffman missed a three and Deboard hit one of two free-throws to make it a two possession game. A steal by Payne and layup sealed the game.
 
Tyreon Payne led all scorers with 29 points for Shawnee State. Trent Hinkle had 21 points to lead the Grenadiers. Nathaniel Hoffman had 17 and Camden Pfeister had 14 points and six rebounds.
 
"Shawnee played to win the game and we didn't," head coach Wiley Brown said. "When they needed a rebound, they pushed us around. When they needed a basket, they attacked us. There were too many turnovers and they killed us on the boards. We played very selfishly. Back to the lab."
 
IU Southeast travels to IU Kokomo Tuesday at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
