Late Surge Lifts No. 11 Tigers Past Grenadiers

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - A fourth quarter surge by No. 11 Georgetown powered the Tigers past the IU Southeast Grenadiers 88-72 Wednesday night at the IUS Activities Building.

Morgan Roberts opened the scoring for IU Southeast with a pair of threes, then Grace Stapleton added another three to go up 11-4 in the first quarter. Georgetown battled back, going on an 8-0 run. Later in the quarter, with the score tied at 20-20, Skyler Mills sent the IUS Acitivites Building into a frenzy with a three pointer at the first quarter buzzer to put the Grenadiers up 23-20.

Alyssa Murphy hit a layup to put the Grenadiers up 35-26, their largest lead of the game, with 3:50 remaining in the half. Murphy's layup would be the last points IU Southeast scored in the first half. The Tigers, however, sunk three threes before the half, and the teams went to the locker room knotted at 35-35.

Georgetown took the lead early in the third but never led by more than seven in the quarter. The Tigers took an eight-point lead with just over seven minutes remaining, but the Grenadiers battled back and had the lead down to 57-55 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter opened with Precious Anuka sinking a layup, drawing a foul, and making the free throw to cut the Tigers' lead to 59-58. After cutting the lead to one, however, the Tigers took control of the game. Georgetown went on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes and used that run to win 88-72.

Anuka led IU Southeast with 20 points and seven rebounds. Ella Brown was second in scoring with 12 points, while Stapleton and Murphy had ten points each. As a team, the Grenadiers shot 44% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc.

IU Southeast dips to 0-3 following Tuesday evening's loss to the Tigers. Coach Abby Downard's squad will wrap up a three-game homestand against No. 8 Campbellsville on Monday, Nov. 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the IUS Activities Building.
