OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team concluded regular season play with a convincing 80-49 win over Oakland City on Saturday.
Linzie Wernert had 20 points and 13 rebounds and
Jesse Ledgerwood added 17 points in the win.
A layup by
Grace Stapleton gave the Grenadiers a 16-7 lead with 3:30 to play in the first quarter but the Mighty Oaks cut the lead to 18-13 at the end of the period.
The Grenadiers clamped down defensively in the second quarter, allowing just eight points in the period on 3-of-18 shooting.
IU Southeast opened the quarter on a 17-6 run to pull away. Back-to-back three-point field goals by Ledgerwood and
Taylor Turpin made it a double-figure lead and the Grenadiers did not look back.
IU Southeast led 40-21 at halftime.
Linzie Wernert had 16 of her 20 points in the first half.
In the third quarter, a three by Ledgerwood followed by a layup on the next possession extended the lead to 32 points.
IU Southeast forced 20 Oakland City turnovers which led to 25 points in the contest. They held the Mighty Oaks to 31 percent shooting from the field and allowed just three made three-pointers in the contest.
IU Southeast will host a quarterfinal matchup in the River States Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The bracket will be released later this weekend.
