NEW ALBANY, Ind. –
Trent Hinkle had 18 of his 27 points in the second half to help IU Southeast pull away and defeat Midway 78-63 in River States Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday.
With IU Southeast leading 19-17,
Cole Thomas hit two free-throws and then connected on a three-pointer to extend the lead to 24-17 with 8:30 to play in the first half.
Midway answered with an 10-0 run to take the lead.
Nathaniel Hoffman hit a three to put IU Southeast back in front and then Hinkle hit a jump shot to make it a 33-29 lead for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast led 37-34 at halftime.
The Grenadiers began to pull away early in the second half when
Camden Pfeister threw down a huge dunk and then scored on a layup to give the Grenadiers a 10-point advantage.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Hoffman and
Jaden Johnson extended the lead to 59-46 with 10 minutes to play.
The Eagles cut the lead to six with 4:30 to play but then
Trent Hinkle took over.
He scored the final 12 points of the game including a jumper and then a driving layup to push the lead back to double-digits.
IU Southeast was 11-of-13 from the free-throw line in the second half compared to Midway's 5-of-10.
The Grenadiers dominated in the paint on a night when they only hit six three-pointers. They outscored the Eagles 34-20 in the paint.
IU Southeast will travel to East No. 1 seed Shawnee State Saturday at 2 p.m.
