NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast Baseball team finished out the first conference series with a weekend sweep against West Virginia University Institute of Technology, winning 4-2 and 4-0 in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 28.
In game one, the Golden Bears took a 1–0 lead in the third inning on a solo home run to left by Cody Cooper, but the Grenadiers answered in the bottom half when
Trevor Goodwin doubled to right field to score
Kevin Moore and even the game at 1–1.
The score remained tied until the seventh, when the Grenadiers broke through with three runs.
Matt Santana tripled to right to bring home
Kasen Parks and give IU Southeast its first lead of the afternoon. Goodwin followed with his second RBI double of the
game, driving in
Kannon Stull to extend the advantage.
Bryson Arnette added another run with a double to left that scored
Travis Kellems, pushing the lead to 4–2.
Trevor Goodwin finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and
Gabe Yonto had two hits.
Brendan Whalen worked four and two-thirds allowing one run on four hits while striking out three. Eli Lauren worked two and a third innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out a pair.
In game two, the Grenadiers won the game with a huge four-run second inning.
Gabe Yonto started the scoring with a two-run home run to right field, bringing in
Alex Schuler to give IU Southeast a 2–0 lead. The inning continued to build when
Caden Lockwood lifted a sacrifice fly to left, allowing
Joel Johnson to score and extend the
advantage to 3–0.
Kevin Moore added one more run with a groundout to second that scored
Kemper Whisman, pushing the lead to 4–0.
Weston Harvey threw five shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out eight for his first win.
Gabe Yonto had two hits and drove in two and
Kemper Whisman was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
IU Southeast takes on Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday.
