NEW ORLEANS – The IU Southeast baseball team jumped out to early leads but could not hang on as No. 7 Loyola University New Orleans defeated IU Southeast 10-5 and 8-7 on Friday.
In game one, IU Southeast scored in the top of the first when
Coulter Hamilton singled to short and scored on a RBI triple by
Caden Lockwood.
But Loyola answered right back with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Nathan McDonald homered to center to start the rally and then four-straight singles tacked on five more runs.
In the second,
Kasen Parks doubled to center to score
Joel Johnson and in the fourth
Alex Schuler scored on a balk to cut the lead to 6-3.
The Grenadiers chipped away with two runs in the fifth with a two-out rally. After Lockwood was hit and Schuler walked,
Konnor Scheidt doubled to left to clear the bases and cut the lead to one.
But a four-run bottom of the inning put the game out of reach.
Konnor Scheidt had two hits and drove in two, and
Coulter Hamilton and
Chance Bentley each had two hits.
In game two, the Grenadiers took a 3-0 lead with three solo home runs in the top of the third inning.
Coulter Hamilton hit a solo home run to left-center for his first home run of the season.
Trevor Goodwin followed with his first of the year to right. Two batters later, Scheidt hit his first to left.
The Grenadiers added a run in the sixth when
Matt Santana hit a solo home run to left for his first as a Grenadier.
The Wolf Pack roared back to take the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The big blow came when McDonald hit a grand slam to left to put Loyola in front.
IU Southeast answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
Gabe Yonto walked and scored on a Hamilton double. Then
Caden Lockwood hit a pinch-hit double down the left-field line to score Hamilton to put IU Southeast in front.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame tied the game and a two-run double by Jordan McKenzie gave the Wolf Pack the lead for good.
Coulter Hamilton drove in
Joel Johnson with a single in the eighth and moved to second on the throw to place runners at second and third but a flyout ended the inning.
Alex Schuler led off the ninth with a double to right-center but was left stranded.
Coulter Hamilton finished 5-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Starter
Eli Laurent worked four no-hit innings, he walked five and struck out seven.
The series concludes with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. ET.
