Softball swept by Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - IU Southeast softball was swept by the Oakland City Mighty Oaks Friday afternoon.

The Grenadiers are 12-9 overall and 6-8 in conference play after Friday's losses to OCU. IU Southeast will take to the diamond again Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. road doubleheader at Midway University.

Game 1: Oakland City 8, IU Southeast 5

The Mighty Oaks used a two-run home and an RBI double to go up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. The Grenadiers would get even two innings later. Ava Allen led off the third with a triple, then Josie Lemmons drew a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs. Two at-bats later, Sofia Guy hit a two-run triple to make it 3-2, then scored after Savannah Gaither singled to center.

The tied score did not last long, however. Oakland City plated three runs in the bottom of the third, then added two more in the fourth to go up 8-3. IU Southeast added a pair of runs in the seventh, after a single by McKenzie Walters and a solo home run by Guy. OCU would take game one 8-5.

Game 2: Oakland City 3, IU Southeast 2

Just like in game one, the Mighty Oaks scored first in the bottom of the first inning. IU Southeast would respond one frame later, taking advantage of two OCU fielding errors. The first error allowed Lillian Mackey to reach base, then the other that allowed Kaitlyn Leister to score and tie the game.

After the Grenadiers left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, the Mighty Oaks scored in the bottom of the fourth. IU Southeast would tie the game in the fifth after Gaither scored on a groundout by Mackey.

The Mighty Oaks would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth via a sacrifice fly. Grace Stapleton recorded a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but a fly out and a groundout ended the game.
