GRAYSON, Ky. - IU Southeast baseball split a doubleheader with the KCU Knights Saturday afternoon.
The Grenadiers are 21-10 overall and 11-3 in conference play following today's split with the Knights. Coach Vincent Tornincasa's squad will be back in action Sunday for the series finale against KCU. First pitch for game three is set for 2:00 p.m.
Game 1: IU Southeast 12, KCU 11
IU Southeast mounted a furious comeback after falling behind 8-3. The Grenadiers began to come back in the top of the sixth, starting when Caden Lockwood scored after a groundout by Joel Johnson. Kasen Parks and Kannon Stull scored shortly after, cutting KCU's lead to 8-6.
One inning later, the Grenadiers took the lead. Matt Santana grounded out to score Gabe Yonto, then Joel Johnson singled to center to tie the game. Parks scored later in the inning to put IU Southeast ahead 9-8, then Stull and Moore padded the lead with back-to-back RBI singles.
The Knights scored two in the bottom of the seventh, then tied the game in the eighth. The Grenadiers went back ahead in the top of the ninth after an RBI single by Stull. IU Southeast completed the comeback by keeping KCU off the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth and won 12-11.
Game 2: KCU 4, IU Southeast 3
Joel Johnson led off game two with a double to center, then scored after an error one at-bat later. One inning later, the Knights went ahead after plating a pair of runs. Two innings later, the Grenadiers went back ahead.
Coulter Hamilton led off the fourth with a walk, then scored after a double to left by Chance Bentley. Bentley scored a few at-bats later after Joel Johnson recorded an infield hit.
Bentley's run would be the last run scored by IU Southeast. The Knights would tie the game in the sixth, then win it in the bottom of the eighth inning after a walk off single.
