BECKLEY, W.Va. - IU Southeast softball swept a doubleheader against the WVU-Tech Golden Bears Friday afternoon.
The Grenadiers improved to 22-17 (16-14 RSC) following Friday's doubleheader sweep over the Golden Bears. Coach Courtney Holm's squad is on the road again Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Rio Grande Red Storm.
Game 1: IU Southeast 10, WVU-Tech 4
The Grenadiers opened the scoring in the second inning after Ava Allen drew a walk with the bases loaded. Lillian Mackey tapped the dish shortly after, when Josie Lemmons reached via fielder's choice. Mackey made it 4-0 one inning later with a double to left. IU Southeast extended its lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning after a two-RBI single by Sofia Guy and a sacrifice fly by Savannah Gaither.
WVU-Tech got back into the game in the fifth inning with three runs. The Grenadiers and the Golden Bears both scored one run each in the sixth, before IU Southeast put the game away in the seventh. McKenzie Walters hit a two-run single to right to make it 10-4, which would prove to be the final score of game one.
Game 2: IU Southeast 10, WVU-Tech 1 (5 innings)
IU Southeast took over the game with a five-run second inning. Lemmons knocked in the first run with a single to left, then Walters doubled to left to make it 4-1. Sofia Guy and Gaither hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 6-1.
The Grenadiers continued to pour on the offense in the third. Alaina Winzeler and Allen hit RBI singles to extend the score to 8-1. Winzeler scored after a WVU-Tech fielding error, and then Walters hit an RBI single to cap off the run-ruling.
IU Southeast finished the game with 10 runs on 15 hits. Lemmons, Walters, Gaither, Leister, Allen, and Winzeler all had multiple hits in game two.
