NEW ALBANY, Ind. - A grand slam by Gabe Yonto in the bottom of the eighth inning capped off an epic, 14-12 comeback victory over (RV) Marian Wednesday evening.
Trailing 10-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Grenadiers slowly began to chip away at the Knights' lead. IU Southeast scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-8.
With runners on second and third and one out, Matt Santana singled to right to tie the game at 10-10. Caden Lockwood kept the rally going with a ground rule double, then Kemper Whisman was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Two at-bats later, with the bases loaded and two outs, Gabe Yonto gave the Grenadiers the lead with a grand slam over the right field fence.
The Knights would not go away quietly, however. Marian scored two runs and had runners on the corners with one out. Alston Whitworth and the Grenadiers' defense held strong, forcing a 5-4-3 double play to end the game. Whitworth was credited with the save.
IU Southeast finished the game with 16 hits, led by Yonto who had a career-high four hits on the afternoon. Yonto also recorded eight RBIs, also a career best. Joel Johnson and Santana had two RBIs each.
The No. 23 Grenadiers are 27-11 on the season following Wednesday's comeback victory over the Knights. Coach Vincent Tornincasa's team will hit the road this weekend for a three-game conference series against Brescia.
