Derek Sims enters his 10th season as an assistant coach for IU Southeast men's basketball.
Sims, who played basketball at IU Southeast from 2000-2002, has been an assistant coach on the Grenadiers' staff since the 2011-12 season. Sims played basketball for two seasons at Spalding University before transferring to IU Southeast.
"Derek has been a vital member of our coaching staff," IU Southeast Head Coach Wiley Brown said. "He has helped us reach our goals and I am glad he will remain on the bench."

Sims has previous coaching experience at the high school level. He spent one year as the Associate Head Coach for the boys' varsity team at Seneca High School and four years at his alma mater, Moore High School, as assistant boys' varsity coach.
From 2019-22, he was the associate head coach and head JV coach at Floyd Central High School. The Highlanders had a 51-14 record and won two sectional championships during his tenure as the associate head coach. His JV record ws 47-7 and a the team set a school record with a 19-1 campaign in 2020.
He is the primary coach in charge of scouting, film exchange and implementation of strategies from scout information. He also implements the offense and is the creator of the dribble drive/motion offense.
He lives in Louisville and has one son.
