NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team opened its season with a convincing 82-49 win over Kentucky Christian on Saturday.
It was an ugly first half as both teams could not find their shooting stroke. The Grenadiers shot just 32 percent from the field in the opening half and held KCU to 27 percent shooting. IU Southeast led 29-21 at the break with Heather Wheat scoring 12 of her game-high 21 points in the first half.
In the second half, the Grenadier offense was unstoppable. They shot 22-33 for 67 percent. Freshman Jade Spaulding came off the bench and scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half.
The Grenadier defense was solid throughout, and forced 28 KCU turnovers and held the Knights to 33 percent shooting. Heather Wheat had five steals and Mary Dye had four.
Four Grenadiers scored in double figures, Wheat had 21, Spaulding had 14, Megan Cureton had 14 and Dye had 10.
IU Southeast is back in action at home on Tuesday when they host St. Mary-of-the-Woods at 7 p.m.
