NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team's quest for a RSC West Division title stayed alive with a 78-75 win over Brescia on Tuesday.
Jesse Ledgerwood had 22 points,
Linzie Wernert had 16 points and six rebounds,
Morgan Roberts had 16 points and
Grace Stapleton had 14 points and six assists in the win.
"I am proud of our response and the way we overcame the start of the game," head coach Abby Downard said. " We grinded it out late and picked up a huge win!"
A sluggish start saw IU Southeast fall behind 19-11 to start the game. IU Southeast shot 33 percent from the field and were just 1-of-5 from three-point range in the first quarter. The Grenadiers trailed 21-15 after one period.
A 10-3 run to start the second quarter, capped off by a three-pointer by
Morgan Roberts, put IU Southeast in front.
A jumper by Graci Risley followed by a layup by Jenna Krampe put the Bearcats back in front by two. They led 39-38 at halftime.
A layup by Caroline Lucas put Brescia in front 48-42 early in the third quarter. IU Southeast scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 52-50 lead.
Jesse Ledgerwood and
Morgan Roberts hit consecutive three-pointers to tie the game and then a layup by Roberts put IU Southeast in front.
A jumper by
Ella Brown at the buzzer gave IU Southeast a 62-59 lead heading to the fourth.
A three-point play by Caroline Lucas swung the lead back in the Bearcats' favor early in the fourth quarter.
The teams traded turnovers and missed shots before Ledgerwood hti a three with 4:34 to play to cut the lead to two.
A jumper by Roberts tied the game at 67 with under four minutes to play.
Linzie Wernert got a steal and
Ella Brown hit a three at the other end to put IU Southeast in front 70-67 with three minutes left.
Another Brescia turnover led to a jumper by Wernert to extend the lead.
With IU Southeast leading 72-69, Brescia stole the inbounds pass but Roberts got a steal on the other end.
Grace Stapleton was fouled and hit both free-throws to extend the lead to 74-69 with 26 seconds left.
Cassidy Morris kept Brescia in it with a three-pointer but Stapleton was fouled again and connected on both free throws to keep the lead a two-possession game.
Another three by Kassady London cut the lead back to one but Stapleton hit two free-throws with 0.3 on the clock to seal the win.
IU Southeast scored 19 points of their 40 points off of turnovers in the second half.
The Grenadiers conclude regular-season play Saturday at Oakland City. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
