BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Stifling defense and a hot offense helped IU Southeast upset NAIA Women's Basketball Div. II No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan 70-62 at the Union College Holiday Classic.
Heather Wheat had 20 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals to lead the Grenadiers. while Megan Cureton added 15 points and Mary Dye and Alex Tinsley each had nine points.
IU Southeast (8-3) led by as many as 22, never trailed and the game was never tied.
The Grenadiers led by as many as 13 in the first half, and the deliberate IWU offense had trouble cutting into the lead.
The Wildcats (9-2) cut the Grenadier lead to six with 11:26 to play in the game but back-to-back three pointers by Alex Tinsley and Megan Cureton sparked an 18-2 Grenadier run that put the game out of reach.
The Wildcats found their shooting stroke late in the game to cut the lead to single digits but the game was decided.
IU Southeast held the Wildcats to 34 percent shooting in the game (21-of-62).
The 70 points that the Wildcats surrendered were the most this season. Indiana Wesleyan's defense entered the game giving up 49.8 points per game which ranked No. 4 in NAIA Div. II.
The Grenadiers shot 49 percent for the game (25-of-51) and 55 percent (12-of-23) in the second half.
The Grenadiers will face Union College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
