PITTSBURGH- Kaylee Bennett banked in a three-pointer with 2:18 remaining and the Grenadiers' held on to defeat No. 23 Point Park 65-63 on Friday night.
With the score tied at 61, Bennett banked in her shot from the right wing for her only points of the game and gave the Grenadiers a 64-61 lead. Solid defense from the Grenadiers secured the win.
Heather Wheat led IU Southeast with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Megan Cureton added 18 points and hit a key free-throw with 16 seconds left to give the Grenadiers a 65-63 lead.
Point Park (19-3, 6-2 KIAC) had two chances to win the game. A good look on a three-pointer from Alexa Xenakis was too strong and after the ball was batted around one last heave from Xenakis from just inside midcourt missed as well.
The Grenadiers (15-7, 6-2 KIAC) were outstanding defending from behind-the-arc throughout the game. They held the Pioneers to 5-of-22 shooting from three-point range for a 22.7 percent clip.
IU Southeast shut down the Point Park offense in the first half, allowing just nine made field goals in the opening half. Point Park shot 9-of-36 from the field in the first 20 minutes and their leading scorer, Kelly Johnson had just three points. She finished with 10 points in the game.
IU Southeast heads to Carlow University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
