Cumberlands Gets Past IU Southeast 69-68

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Grenadiers had three players score at least 15 points but were edged by University of the Cumberlands 69-68 on Saturday afternoon.

After Demetrius Stanton hit two free throws to give IU Southeast a 68-67 lead, Joe Jackson was called for a foul as Xavier Owens tried to hit a fade-away jumper at the buzzer. Jackson fouled out and Owens hit both free throws with 0.4 second left.

The Grenadiers (4-6) could not get a shot away and the Patriots escaped with the win.

Robert Sawyer and Devon White each had 17 points while Demetrius Stanton added 16. Sawyer also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Grenadiers committed 22 turnovers to Cumberlands' 10 but still had chances to take the game.

IU Southeast led 41-34 with 14:33 remaining in the game but could not extend their lead.

Xavier Owens had 20 points to lead the Patriots.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well from the line, they combined to make 28-of-35 free throws.

IU Southeast takes on Grace College on Dec. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
