Grenadiers Fall To Brescia In KIAC Game of the Week

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team lost a hard-fought game to Brescia University 77-69 in the KIAC Game of the Week Saturday.

Mary Dye had a monster game with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Jocelyn Mousty added 12 points and seven rebounds and Annie Thomas had 11 points.

The Grenadiers (7-9, 4-3 KIAC) struggled offensively to open the game and allowed the Bearcats to open an 11-4 advantage just four minutes into the contest.

IU Southeast responded with a 7-2 run to keep the game close and trailed 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Grenadiers played a great second period, outscoring the Bearcats 23-13. They hit four three-pointers in the quarter and got big three-point shots from Baylee Krueger, Halea Petro and Josie Hockman which led to a 38-32 lead at halftime.

IU Southeast was able to open a 42-34 lead early in the third quarter as Mary Dye got a layup to fall off of a nice pass from Mousty, but Brescia responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game. There were four ties and four lead change in the period alone.

In the fourth quarter, Brescia was able to put the game away with timely shooting from behind-the-arc. Shelbi Samsil hit three big three-point shots in the final period to help the Bearcats pull away.

The Grenadiers cut the lead to 69-65 with four minutes to play but Samsil hit a three to make it 72-65 and seal the win.

The Bearcat bench was a key to the win, outscoring IU Southeast 25-9.

Brescia's (12-10, 7-2 KIAC) offense heated up in the second half, hitting six three-pointers and shooting 18-of-37 (49 percent) from the field.

Julie Whitfill had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Kelsey Kirkpatrick added 14 points in the win.

IU Southeast travels to Cincinnati Christian Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and the Bearcats host IU Kokomo at 6 p.m. ET.
