NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 campaign with a 65-51 loss to Cumberland University on Homecoming.

Jocelyn Mousty led the Grenadiers with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ariana Sandefur added nine points off-the-bench.

The IU Southeast offense struggled throughout, as IU Southeast shot 15-of-57 from the field and made just four three-pointers.

The Grenadiers (0-1) fell behind 20-8 in the first quarter and trailed 38-23 at halftime.

In the third quarter, IU Southeast opened the period on a 9-1 run to cut the lead to nine points, but the Phoenix led 54-40 after three periods of play.

IU Southeast cut the lead to 59-51 with three minutes to play, but they would not get closer.

The IU Southeast press caused 10 second-half turnovers which helped the Grenadiers get back into the game. Mousty scored all 12 of her points in the second half.

Freshmen Madi Woods, Jenna Shine, Ashley Lyninger and Maci Lubker joined Sandefur by scoring the first points of their collegiate careers on Saturday.

IU Southeast hosts Trinity Christian on Friday at 5 p.m.
