WILMORE, Ky. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to Asbury University 66-62 in the KIAC Semifinals Saturday.
Annie Thomas had 20 points to lead IU Southeast, Michaela Harris and Josie Hockman each added 11 for the Grenadiers. Senior Mary Dye scored nine points and had eight rebounds in her final game for IU Southeast.
IU Southeast (15-15) started slowly offensively and trailed 10-2 five minutes into the game.
The Grenadiers shot just 29 percent in the first half and committed 11 turnovers. Michaela Harris hit a three at the buzzer to cut the lead to 32-23 at halftime.
In the second half, the Grenadiers cut the lead to five in the third quarter, but Asbury responded with three-straight baskets to bring the lead back to 11 points. At the end of the third quarter, the Grenadiers trailed 52-40.
The Grenadiers faced their largest deficit in the fourth quarter when they trailed 57-40 with 8:40 to play.
IU Southeast responded with a 17-3 run to cut the lead to three at 60-57 when Dye got a rebound and putback.
The Grenadiers got back in the game by forcing turnovers and attacking the basket. IU Southeast was just 3-of-13 from behind-the-arc compared to Asbury's 11-of-29 from three-point range. The three-point disparity proved to be the difference in the game as Asbury was able to hit key three-pointers down the stretch to keep IU Southeast at bay.
