Rio Grande Gets Past IU Southeast 76-73

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter but could not hang on as the University of Rio Grande defeated the Grenadiers 76-73 Saturday.

Madi Woods had 16 points to lead IU Southeast. Ashley Johnson added 14 points, Ashley Lyninger had 11 points and Annie Thomas had 10 points.

The Grenadiers (9-6, 3-3 RSC) opened the first half by shooting 53 percent from the field and were 6-of-7 from behind-the-arc. The largest lead for IU Southeast was 41-25 and the Grenadiers led 43-32 at halftime.

IU Southeast forced 11 turnovers in the first half and held the RedStorm to 35 percent from the field.

The roles were reversed in the second half as Rio Grande caught fire offensively. The RedStorm outscored the Grenadiers 44-30 and shot 58 percent from the field.

Rio Grande closed the fourth quarter on a 16-6 run. Madi Woods missed a three-point attempt from the corner with 3.5 seconds left that would have given IU Southeast the lead. After two made three-throws by Rio Grande's Abby Wendel, a desperation heave by Baylee Krueger fell short and Rio Grande completed the comeback.

Jasmine Smith had 18 points and Chyna Chambers added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Rio Grande.

The Grenadiers travel to IU Kokomo Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
